Volunteer Case Study – Syed Salman Gilani (Mani)
I was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. I have been part of Chester Adult Phab Club, a charity for people with and without disabilities since 2013 and became a volunteer because my wife had started working for a member of Chester Phab Club. Even when I was still living in Pakistan I used to volunteer for Chester Phab by designing ID Cards for members who were raising vital funds at bag packs and designing name tags for various events.
I moved to Chester in December 2014 and was invited to join the club to see Warwick Davis in a Pantomime staged in Manchester. That was also the first time I met many of the members of Phab, all of whom made me very welcome, and I made a lot of friends.
The first challenge was to give the Chester Phab website a new look and within weeks with some support I launched our Club’s updated website, assisting many members to keep up to date of upcoming events and news from the club. To this day I continue to regularly update the site.
I have volunteered at numerous fundraising events and have also designed new marketing materials to showcase our services and volunteering opportunities including our Club’s new standalone banner.
Volunteering with Chester Phab is very rewarding, I feel good every time I know I have assisted the club even in the smallest of tasks. I have learnt a lot from others, made new friends and met a lot of stars. It has also helped me in my career progression.”
Featured below is one our volunteers Janette and ex volunteer Val who since joining Chester Adult Phab Social Club have enjoyed being a part of our organisation and the opportunities provided.
Janette and ex volunteer Val (who moved abroad 2014) took part in an ‘Introduction to Aviation’ day at Cranfield Airport in Bedfordshire organised by National Phab, Chester Adult Phab Social Club and Freedom in the Air.
“Having had the opportunity to fulfil one of my life long ambitions is absolutely amazing and at the same time unbelievable. From a very young age I have wanted to experience sitting in the cabin of an aircraft and help the pilot fly the plane and thanks to Phab and ‘Freedom in the Air’ my dream has come true! The experience was far better than I had ever imagined it to be; I was able to take control of the aeroplane whilst both on the ground and when flying 2000 feet in the air above Berkshire. This was a truly amazing experience and for me possibly a once in a life time opportunity that I will always be grateful of, being a relatively new volunteer worker / committee member to Chester Adult Phab Social Club, I feel so thankful to them for nominating me”.
“Since I joined Chester Adult Phab Club my life has taken off – Flying and sailing, I’m living the high life. Thanks to Freedom in the Air, Chester Adult Phab Social Club and National Phab my feet haven’t touched the ground”.
Val enjoyed a sailing holiday organised by Phab National and Jubilee Sailing Trust, (JST) she sailed on the Tenacious tall ship.
“I have made lifelong friends, through joining Chester Adult Phab”
Val moved abroad during 2014 and is sadly no longer a volunteer with Chester Phab – we miss her very much but still keep in touch.
Jubilee Sailing Trust
Sailing with the Jubilee Sailing Trust is a world away from an ordinary holiday. It is challenging, very sociable, and a learning experience that pushes the boundaries for everyone involved, but above all it is amazing fun!
Lord Nelson and Tenacious remain the only two square-rigged tall ships in the world that have been specifically designed and built to enable people with a whole range of different physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals. The ships are fully accessible and everyone is expected to take part in all aspects of sailing the ship – there are definitely no passengers! www.jst.org.uk
Our club is seeking volunteers for various roles including Fundraising and Sponsored Events ie Zip Wire Challenge Snowdonia, Marketing, and Organising of Events, Photoshop skills including photography of our events, writing of press releases, Members Support Assistant at socials plus other rewarding and exciting opportunities.
